Working abroad: Who else is covered by my expat insurance?

If you are registered with the Overseas Social Security Scheme (SSOM), you can apply for certain members of your family to be covered by your health insurance as well. These family members are referred to as ‘dependants’ and can also benefit from your insurance cover at no extra cost!

Who is eligible for dependent status?

• Your partner: if you are married or have been living at the same address for at least 6 months.
• Your children/adopted children/grandchildren: if they are under 18, or if they are aged between 18 and 25 and are full-time students. In the latter case, you will need to provide proof of enrolment or an apprenticeship contract each year. For your grandchildren, you will also need to prove that they live with you.
• Your partner’s children/adopted children/grandchildren: if your partner is classified as a dependant, the same rules apply to their children/adopted children/grandchildren.

How can I extend my insurance cover to another person?

1. Please complete the online form:
   • Click on the ‘Membership – Dependants’ form
2. Please provide us with the requested documents. Depending on the situation, you may need to provide several documents, such as:
   • a statement from the last mutual insurance company (or similar organisation) with which the person was insured, stating the date on which the previous insurance cover ended. This statement is required in all circumstances;
   • an extract from the marriage certificate or a statement from the local authorities in the case of cohabitation;

   • a birth or adoption certificate for your grandchildren, showing the family relationship between you and them, and a document proving that they are indeed your dependants (a certificate of legal cohabitation, for example).
3. Please submit your request:
   • You can complete the form without attaching the supporting documents, but we will only be able to process your application once we have received all the documents.
   • Depending on your circumstances, we may ask you to provide additional documents or further details.

Please note: To ensure that your family members have adequate cover at all times, it is important that you notify us in good time of any changes to your family circumstances, such as a marriage, a birth or a separation. For children who have reached the age of majority, you must submit the necessary certificates each year.
