From your SSOM pension to a survivor's pension for your spouse
Provided that a request is made, your spouse may be entitled to a survivor's pension (widow/widower pension) upon your death. This represents a percentage of the retirement pension of the deceased spouse. A percentage that depends on the age and situation of the deceased person, but also on the age difference between the spouses.
The amount of the survivor's pension is at least 45% and at most 60% of the retirement pension of the spouse. If both spouses are 65 years or older at the time of death, the age difference no longer influences the percentage.

How to activate the survivor's pension?
If your death occurs while you are residing in Belgium, it is automatically reported to us. If it coincides with a residence abroad, we must be notified as soon as possible, with the death certificate as support.
The opening of the right to survivor's pension is not automatic in any case. The benefit application must therefore be submitted quickly, preferably directly via our online form or via a form provided by us upon simple request. Please note that if you are receiving a pension from another organization, your surviving spouse will also need to contact them separately.
